ABOUT

Rachael Juzeler headshot

I am a multifaceted artist with a practice rooted in craft; I specialize in kiln-worked glass, mosaic, public art & creative reuse. My artwork expresses a strong sense of place and often uses artistic interpretation of scientific subject matter to illuminate issues of human interaction with natural and marine environments. I focus on creative reuse and impacts of the waste stream on environments in much of my work, while transferring naturally occurring patterns into a visual language.

My artistic practice is experimental, innovative, hands-on, process based and grounded in a sense of place. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and relocated to Southeast Alaska in 1996 by choice, where I live and work out of my home, a relic from the Treadwell mines in Douglas Alaska. I am endlessly fascinated by the beauty and ruins of my surroundings and create visually stunning works, often interpreting my vision in a modern-day context with durable and waste materials that blend seamlessly with natural and manmade environments.

Since 2021, I've attended Pilchuck Glass School focusing on hot glass sand casting. I found my calling. I have since put all my earnings into building a large outdoor pavilion to house a glass furnace, and purchased a glass crusher in 2024 to utilize waste glass in my artistic creations. My ultimate goal is to create an outstanding glass studio where I can host artists throughout Alaska and the world to join me in my pursuit of creative thought and artistic action.
